Payment method hierarchy and prioritisation of wallet funds

We've redesigned the payment step of checkout so supporters can see all of their available payment methods at a glance - and you can now configure whether wallet balance appears above or below other payment options.

    Why this matters

Previously, when a supporter had enough wallet balance to cover their cart, checkout showed a single "Confirm Purchase" button and tucked real payment methods behind a "View other payment methods" link and collapsed accordions. And when a wallet balance didn't cover the full total, we automatically used the balance and charged the difference - without the supporter explicitly choosing that. This update puts all payment options in plain view and gives supporters a clear choice about when their wallet funds are used.

    What's new

All payment methods visible in checkout

Cards and other payment methods now appear above the fold in the payment step, on both web and the mobile apps. The old pattern of hiding them behind accordions and a secondary link is gone, and we've removed accordions where they weren't helping the experience.

Supporters choose when to use their wallet

Wallet balance can now be toggled on or off at checkout. Bonus or Gift funds are only used when a supporter chooses to pay with their wallet - they're no longer automatically consumed first.

When a wallet balance doesn't cover the full cart total, the supporter now makes an explicit choice:

    • Use their full wallet balance and pay the remainder with a real payment method, or
    • Pay the entire total with a real payment method.

Note: Wallet use is all-or-nothing. Supporters can't apply just a portion of their balance to a purchase.

    Configurable wallet position

A new configuration controls whether wallet balance appears above all other payment methods (and is selected by default when a balance is available) or below them (deselected by default). Wallet balance won't appear at all if the supporter's balance is $0, wallet balance is switched off for your platform, or the wallet is restricted.

If you'd like to change where wallet balance sits in your checkout, you can do so via Site config > Prioritise Wallet Funds in Checkout or reach out to your Customer Success Manager.

    Smarter default selection

Checkout automatically selects the highest-priority payment method when it's viable - the supporter's wallet if wallet is prioritised and the balance is sufficient, or their default card where cards are prioritised. Fewer clicks, same conversion-friendly flow.

Refreshed Apple Pay and Google Pay buttons on web

The Apple Pay and Google Pay buttons in the web checkout now use small logos consistent with other payment methods, matching the look of the mobile apps.

How this works with recurring and pre-order purchases

    • Recurring purchases: the wallet toggle applies to the first payment only. Subsequent recurring payments follow your existing recurring payment method configuration.
      • Use funds, then default payment method
      • Only use default payment method
      • Only use funds
    • Pre-order purchases: because payment is processed when the draw opens, the wallet toggle stays on for carts containing a pre-order item. Checkout explains to the supporter that wallet funds will be used first, with any remaining balance charged to their payment method.

    Who this impacts

This change applies to all partners across web and the Android apps. Existing checkout behaviour is preserved as closely as possible - platforms currently prioritising wallet balance keep it displayed first by default, while newer configurations display real payment methods first. Your existing admin options for enabling payment methods and setting their display order are unchanged.
